Most Jews in Egypt had to flee the country at a moment's notice when their expulsion was ordered by decree. Irène Buenavida shares nostalgic recollections of a bygone era in the land of the Nile. Today the family is scattered all over the world. Like the vast majority of Jews from Arab countries, they had no choice but to leave the land where they were born.
Irène Buenavida was born in Cairo in 1947. Her Sephardi family originates from Iraq, Egypt, Morocco, Turkey and the Holy Land, and lived in Egypt until 1966, the year she immigrated to Canada. Irène Buenavida worked in banking for 40 years, and devotes her time to many different charitable organizations, including AJOE, the Association of Jews from Egypt.
