I'm caught in a vice. On the one hand, I'm the rabbi's daughter, on the other, I love with all my soul someone whom self-proclaimed liberal girls my age wouldn't dare introduce to their parents. (Excerpt from North Star) Despite countless obstacles, thanks to our fused love, Gérard Étienne and I succeeded in transcending boundaries and in living our Jewish and Haitian identities. Here Kaddish for a Haitian recounts the last hours of a man dedicated to every struggle for justice, as experienced within a millennia- old tradition where only authentic emotions have a place. Seven days, thirty days, like a lifetime.

Natania Etienne, born Feuerwerker, grew up Place des Vosges, in Paris. After emigrating to Canada, in Montreal she met Gérard Étienne, a Haitian writer in exile. Together, they succeeded against all odds, sometimes encountering exceptional individuals who were able to rise above the prejudices of our time. From 14 Place des Vosges to Montreal, Jerusalem, Matane, Beauharnois, Moncton, Port-au-Prince, and Cap-Haïtien, she has witnessed a world in upheaval. These are the stages of her life. Today, in Bat Yam, she reminisces.
